Using a Toy Bin Organizer
How do you use a toy bin organizer to the best of your ability? This piece of furniture can be very useful, but only if you make it so. Here’s a quick guide to help you get the most out of yours.
- Label the bins. All those bins are not going to help you if they are not labeled. The toys will just get jumbled together, which makes it about the same as having a toy box. Label the bins so that you and your children know what belongs in each one. Use pictures if your child is not yet reading.
- Give your child ownership. Make sure to include your child when you are putting away all the toys in the bins for the first time. Have them help you make the pictures to put on the bins. Let them decide what goes in which bin. This will help them feel that the toy organization system really belongs to them, which helps them take more responsibility in putting things back where they belong.
- Teach your child how to use the toy bin organizer. No organization system is going to work unless your child knows how to use it. Teach them how to sort the toys. Make it fun. Include some toy organization games to help them learn what goes where. You can have races and give out prizes for jobs well done (ice cream always works well for my kids!)
- Attach the toy organizer to the wall. This is a complete necessity if you have a child who likes to climb on it. These organizers are not made to be climbed on. Many now come with kits to help you attach it. It can be a pain if toys happen to drop behind it, but your child’s safety is worth it.
- Clean the toy bin organizer when necessary. One thing that’s really nice about the plastic bins is they can just be wiped down with soapy water. You may want to clean them every few months, or after you’ve had a sickness in your house.
